Northern Ireland Track Championships
Sat 27 Aug
A good turnout of Track enthusiasts truned up at Orangefield Track for the Northern Ireland Track Championships.
First held last year as the Ulsters, it was decided to alternate the promotion, with this year being the `Northern Irelands`
Due to limited track time available, Championships were only held in the Time Trial and Pursuit discipline.
First up was the combined Senior, Junior & Veterans Kilo. This saw Irelands Track Coach, Brian Nugent in the driving seat. Fresh from managing the Ireland Junior track team to great things at the Worlds, Brian proved fastest on the day, recording 1.18.88, one of only two riders inside 1.20. Ards rider Mal McKechnie, specialising in track racing this season, took the Silver in 1.19.57.

Madigan Grand Prix Sat 6 Aug.
Phoenix rider Matt Ward stole the show at the Madigan Grand Prix, held over 56 miles, covering three laps of the Kilroot-Glynn-Gleno circuit. The main move came on the final ascent of the 7-sisters climb, with 5 miles remaining when Glenarm rider Ben Morrow attacked. He was joined by Maryland`s Denis Easton and Ward, with the trio opening up a 20 second advantage. They held on to their slender advantage on the Beltoy descent, with Ward holding off Morrow in the final sprint, with Easton taking 3rd.
The remainder were led in by Northern`s Fraser Duncan, with Glen Kinning (Castlereagh) and Willie Hamilton (East Antrim) completing the top 6.

NI Veterans Assoc. `10`Championship 14 June
When is the fastest rider in a Time Trial not the winner - read on..
22 riders lined up for the NI Veterans (Association) 10 mile championship on the Woodgreen course on Tuesday 14 June.
Whilst the NICF has `opened` all its Championships this year to Cycling Ulster members. The Veterans Association has not, therefore the NI Vets Championship is essentiallya club championship, as opposed to a full NI Title event.
To be eligible, a rider must meet three criteria.
1 He or she must have reached his or her 40th Birthday. (This would rule some riders out, as despite being issued with a Veterans Licence - as it is issued in the year the rider turns 40, if they have not celebrated their milestone birthday they are not eilgible for NI Vets Assoc. events.)
2 He or she must be a member of the NICF. (As the Vets Association have not `opened their championships) therefore ruling out Cycling Ulster members.
3 He or she must join the `Veterans Cycling Association of Northern Ireland` - the `club` that promote Vets races & championships.
Having met the above criteria, the Vets association then declare the winner to be the fastest rider on `age standard` This is essentially a handicap basis worked on age. A nationally accepted handicapping system is in place with target times set for each age. A rider who beats his or her `standard` by the biggest margin is the winner. This ensures that riders are still winning Championships well in to their 60s. It is thought that medals are still presented for the fastest three, but the important ones are for `Age Standard`
Having cleared all that up (!!) Below is the full list of times, and hopefully an explanation as to who did and didn`t count!

NI Youth Road Championships - Sat 11 June
Run off in glorious conditions, Toyota North Down CC promoted the Northern Ireland Youth

Road Championships over a testing 5.7 mile circuit on the East Coast between Bangor and Donaghadee.
There was a good turnout in all three categories, and some close racing throughout the day.
The Under 16s went the way of All Ireland Under 16 Time Trial Champion, Thomas Martin (Clann Eireann CC) he broke clear on the second of four laps, and built up an unassailable lead by the finish. The promoting club`s Mike Mitchell easily took the bunch sprint for second place, ahead of Ballymena`s Jamie McKillop and Graham Boyd (XMTB) Ballymena RC, led by McKillop and backed up by Leo McAllister, Ricky Baird took the team.
The under 14s was another showdown between All Ireland TT champion Stuart Henry (TND) and Peter Williams (Orchard Whs) one of the key Under 14s this season, Johnny Beers (XMTB) was absent, on representative duty at a Mountain Bike event in England. The Under 14s fought hard over the 13 miles duration, with no one able to break free. It came down to a 4-up sprint for the line, which went the way of Williams. Ards CCs Clifford Blayney took second, with Henry 3rd and clubmate Gareth Boyle 4th.
The Under 12s saw Rachel Mitchell a runaway winner, she solo`d to victory ahead of XMTBs Claire Oakley, with Orchard wheelers` Jessica Fiddes 3rd.

NI Road Championships - Evans the master.
Promoted by Ballymena Road CLub, the 2005 Northern Ireland Road Championships was held over 6 laps of a demanding 11.5 mile circuit the Dunnyvadden Greenhill area East of Ballymena. The toughness of the route may have put some riders off, but it did not detract from a good days racing, with Tommy Evans scoring a fine lone win. It may have been different if one of the main challengers, Banbridges Roger AIken, had not crashed in the closing stages of the race.
The race split on the first lap, with a group of 8 riders moving clear. This group split again, with Evans, Ryan COnnor, Fraser Duncan and Roger Aiken forging clear, holding a one minute advantage by the end of lap 3.
Aiken came down on the penultimate lap, and chased to regain the leaders with Duncan. Evans dropped Connor to come home alone, with Connor at 21 seconds. Aiken took 3rd at 39 seconds.
In the Veterans event, Gordon Scott made it two-in-a-row outsprinting breakaway companion Jim McConnell. The Junior event saw Adam Petrie-Armstrong come home alone with over a minute to spare over Maryland`s John Sloan. Ballymena`s Conor McAllister took Bronze.
In the Ladies event. Omagh CC`s Ann McFarland finished 26 seconds ahead of 10 Mile Champion Trudy Brown.

With the counting done, Martin lost out on a place by 4-hundredths of a second! Chris Jensen (Sorrento) Geoff O`Hanranan (Clonmel) and Denis Dunworth (Killorglin) are the final squad, with Martin and William Connolly (Western lake
